Structure, Light, and Intent — A Conversation with Abhinav Bhandari

Inspiration Rooted in Structure, Cinema, and Movement

Abhinav Bhandari’s visual language is rooted in architecture, shaping his sense of space, framing, and light. Influenced by cinema and travel, his work balances structure with atmosphere, forming a style that feels both intentional and instinctive.

“My visual language is deeply influenced by my transition from architecture into fashion photography. That background continues to shape how I see — in terms of space, structure, and how light interacts within a frame .

He treats every frame like a built environment: deliberate, layered, and alive with tension between form and emotion.

In this striking studio portrait, a model moves against a raw metallic panel in near darkness, her garment flowing with motion blur while crisp light traces her silhouette. The architectural minimalism and controlled chaos perfectly echo Abhinav’s signature blend of precision and energy.

Where Vision Leads, Tools Follow

Early in his career, Abhinav learned that gear is never the hero — seeing is. In an industry often driven by equipment, he keeps the focus clear: vision always comes first.

“In the beginning, equipment doesn’t define your work — learning how to see does. As your practice evolves, you start recognizing that certain ideas demand specific tools.Vision always leads, and gear follows.”

Close and intimate, this portrait captures a young woman gazing directly at the viewer while cradling a pair of dusty-rose suede sneakers. The soft directional light sculpts her features and the product details with equal reverence — a masterclass in letting vision dictate every technical choice.

The Invisible Work Behind the Image

While final images may feel seamless, much of the real work happens long before the shoot begins.

Lighting and pre-production are often overlooked. An image might come together in 10–15 minutes on set, but what isn’t visible is the years of experience and refinement that make that efficiency possible.

Every shadow, every highlight, every negative space is planned long before the shutter clicks.

Two women in rich, patterned traditional garments command the frame against a deep black backdrop, their presence grounded by a minimal, structured set. One sits with quiet intensity while the other stands poised beside her, creating a balanced, sculptural composition. Dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and precise placement reveal the architectural thinking that underpins even the most culturally rooted imagery.

Where Ideas Take Shape

For Abhinav, the most rewarding part of the process happens before the camera is even picked up.

“The concept-building stage is the most rewarding for me. It’s where the thinking is unrestricted —where you can push ideas and build a world around the image, as long as the budget allows it.”

He thrives on the collaborative energy that emerges once the world is built and the team begins to move within it, where different creative inputs add depth to the process. In this space, concept-driven imagery becomes a balance between planning and spontaneity — shaped by both individual vision and collective energy.

Cultural Pulse, Global Lens

Whether shooting raw street energy or refined studio work, Abhinav’s images carry an unmistakable sense of place and identity.
