Inspiration That Starts with the Subject
For Laurelle Kamara, inspiration doesn’t begin with references — it starts with people.
“I draw a lot of my inspiration from my subjects. For my personal work, especially, I’m very intentional about who I photograph—I’m always interested in working with diverse people and telling stories that feel honest and underrepresented..”
This philosophy is reflected in imagery that feels intentional yet unforced. Rather than chasing perfection, the work focuses on presence, identity, and emotion — capturing subjects as they are, not as they’re directed to be.

In this quiet, beautifully lit portrait, the subject’s vibrant blue floral jacket and soft green-gold eye makeup pop against the neutral wall. The side profile and relaxed posture let her natural presence take centre stage — exactly the kind of honest moment Laurelle aims to preserve.
Fashion Roots Meet Creative Collaboration
Coming from a fashion background, Laurelle naturally leans into editorial storytelling, but she always leaves room for the client’s voice.
“It’s usually a balance between my own artistic interests and the client’s vision. Coming from a fashion background, I naturally draw from editorial, styling, and visual storytelling, but I always adapt that to fit the purpose of the shoot. Collaboration is a big part of my process.”
With roots in fashion and editorial storytelling, the work carries a refined visual language while remaining adaptable. The result is imagery that feels both considered and collaborative — aligning creative direction with purpose.

This explosive orange editorial is pure energy. The model’s pleated orange shirt, glittering red eye makeup, and oversized paper flowers create a bold, joyful statement. The saturated colour and direct gaze show how Laurelle can turn a fashion concept into something that feels alive and personal.
Where Simplicity Reveals Strength
Not every image relies on bold styling or complex setups.
“I try to connect with each person and photograph them in a way that feels natural to who they are, almost like documenting their essence rather than directing it too heavily.”
Through subtle tones, minimal composition, and soft lighting, the focus shifts entirely to the subject. This restraint creates space for authenticity, allowing each image to feel grounded and emotionally resonant.
Vision Over Equipment
Whether shooting on film or digital, Laurelle keeps the focus on the idea rather than the gear.
“For me, vision is always the most important factor. Equipment definitely has its place, especially when working across both film and digital, but it’s really just a tool to support the idea.”
A film-influenced mindset brings intention and patience into the process. Each frame feels deliberate, reinforcing the idea that strong imagery is driven by perspective, not gear.

Shot against a rich red backdrop, this dramatic low-angle portrait captures raw emotion and presence. The filmic quality, strong contrast, and layered necklaces give it a timeless, almost cinematic feel — proof that when the vision is clear, the equipment simply gets out of the way.
The Shift Toward Authentic Commercial Storytelling
Laurelle has noticed a clear shift in the industry — one that aligns perfectly with her own approach.
“Clients are placing a lot more value on authenticity and storytelling now. There’s been a shift away from overly polished, staged imagery towards visuals that feel more real and relatable.”
Brands are moving away from overly polished visuals, instead seeking imagery that feels honest, diverse, and emotionally engaging. This evolution places greater value on perspective — not just execution.
Creating Space for Real Connection
At the heart of everything Laurelle does is the connection she builds with the people in front of her lens.
“The most rewarding part for me is the connection with people. Whether it’s a portrait session, an event, or a fashion shoot, I really enjoy creating a space where people feel comfortable and seen. When that happens, you get images that feel genuine and emotional, and that’s what I’m always aiming for.”
That connection is what transforms a photograph into something more — not just seen, but felt.

This clean studio portrait — complete with classic Polaroid border — shows Laurelle’s ability to create a calm, confident space. The subject’s thoughtful pose and minimalist setting let his personality shine through naturally.
