Creative Vision and Hidden Meaning — A Conversation with Àlex Martínez

Inspiration That Starts with Sound and Search

Alex draws inspiration from visual references found through deeper online searching — from campaigns and magazines to e-commerce imagery — while music plays a central role in shaping mood, emotion, and creative direction.

“I normally source images online. Preferably where it’s not as fast to find what you’re after and you have to do a little digging. Pinterest feels like the easiest platform to put together an idea, for sure, but I like to search for references on e-commerce, campaigns, magazines… and currently music.

Building on that, Alex brings a documentary edge to bold, colour-driven fashion and portrait work to create imagery that feels authentic, dynamic, and purposefully crafted for brands and studios.

The movement, rhythm, and energy in the pose evoke music and emotion, aligning with the idea of music as a key source of inspiration. The bold red background creates a strong mood, reflecting the atmosphere built on set. The image feels expressive and instinctive rather than staged, suggesting ideas shaped by emotion first. Its natural motion also adds a spontaneous quality, showing that creativity is rarely immediate or obvious.

Vision Comes Before Equipment

While tools can play an important role in supporting a production, Alex believes they should never lead the creative process. For him, equipment is valuable and often necessary, but true impact comes from vision, ideas, and the ability to see beyond the gear.

“Vision to me is everything. I don't shoot with fancy equipment for each project, so I value creativity and an open mind when approaching a shoot. Of course, a good lens and the tools you need make everything run smoothly but if you lack the vision, the magic’s simply not there. Also, never underestimate a homemade gadget or a smart quick fix! ”

That perspective gives Alex’s work a refreshing sense of freedom. Rather than depending on expensive setups, he focuses on ideas, adaptability, and finding creative solutions that keep the energy of a shoot alive.

This image feels shaped by creative thinking rather than expensive gear. The blurred figures in the foreground add movement and depth through a simple but clever technique, showing how imagination can turn an ordinary setup into something striking. The calm, centered subject against the motion around her creates a strong and intentional composition. It shows that powerful images come from ideas, timing, and perspective more than equipment. It also reflects how simple fixes and practical creativity can create magic when vision leads.

The Details That Add a Second Story

One element often missed in fast-paced commercial work is the attention to small, intentional details. Alex consciously weaves subtle messages, playful hints, and layered meanings into his images, creating work that reveals more the longer you look.

Details. In my work –and in general– they matter way more than we think. I like to add messages and ideas as often as I can. It's something I do for myself and that I think, if you pay close attention, adds a new layer of meaning to every piece.

These hidden layers become part of what makes the work memorable. Strong compositions and bold styling may capture attention first, but smaller visual clues reward viewers who take a closer look.

At first glance, this image feels bold and striking, but a closer look reveals the skin texture, intense gaze, hand placement, and rings that add character and meaning. The close framing makes every element feel intentional, showing how small details can shape mood and story. It creates a deeper second layer beyond the strong first impression.

The Reward of Bringing Ideas to Life

While some ideas come together effortlessly, others demand time, patience, and deep intention. For Alex, the greatest creative reward comes from the latter — successfully transforming a concept into an image that feels meaningful and intentional.

“I feel most rewarded when an idea comes to life –and it actually makes sense–, because it’s often difficult to photograph a concept that translates into something that doesn’t feel superficial or vague. I like being intentional with my work and taking my time.”

Of course, finishing an image he’s truly proud of matters deeply. Yet what satisfies Alex most in the long run is the entire process — looking back and remembering the journey behind each photograph. There’s something magical about that.

This striking black-and-white portrait uses dramatic side lighting and swirling smoke to create depth, mood, and raw emotion. It reflects the moments Alex finds most rewarding—when patience, intention, and a strong idea come together to turn an image into something meaningful, layered, and far beyond the surface.
