Visual Storytelling with Purpose — Behind Brehan Todd’s Creative Vision
Brehan Todd creates images that feel both culturally relevant and emotionally engaging. Through bold visual choices, immersive storytelling, and a distinctive creative perspective, his work stands out across fashion and commercial photography. His images feel contemporary while still carrying a sense of depth and connection. In this conversation, he shares where inspiration comes from, why context plays a crucial role in visual storytelling, and how instinct continues to shape the creative process in an ever-evolving landscape.

Drawing Inspiration from Culture in Motion
For Brehan Todd, inspiration rarely comes from a single place. Rather than looking only within fashion, he pays attention to the cultural shifts and conversations shaping the world around him. Instead of waiting for trends to arrive, he focuses on the early signals that often shape them first. Politics, social conversations, film, architecture, and movement all play a role in influencing his visual language, helping him create work that feels connected to a specific moment in time while remaining emotionally engaging.
“Everywhere culture is moving before it arrives in the mainstream. I pay close attention to what’s happening politically and socially — not to make “statement” work for its own sake, but because the most resonant images are the ones that feel like they belong to a specific moment in time.”
This perspective naturally carries into his work, resulting in images that feel alive and culturally connected. Through immersive storytelling and carefully crafted visual elements, Todd creates frames that feel contemporary while maintaining a timeless quality.
“My goal is always to make something that’s visually high-level but emotionally legible –sophisticated without being inaccessible.”

This image reflects the ideas explored in the text through bold visual choices, strong artistic direction, and influences that extend beyond traditional fashion imagery. The vibrant colors and structured composition create a contemporary feel that aligns with Todd’s approach to building visually striking work with emotional depth and a distinct cultural identity.
Creating Compelling Product Images
For Brehan Todd, a strong product image goes beyond clean lighting and perfect angles. It’s about creating a sense of atmosphere around the object, making it feel like it naturally belongs within a story rather than simply existing in a frame.
“Context and tension. A product image fails when it’s just documentation — here’s the thing, on a surface, in good light. What makes it compelling is when there’s a world around it, even if that world is implied. Who wore this? Where are they going? What’s the mood? I approach product work the same way I approach editorial — the object has to feel alive inside the frame, not placed into it. ”
This mindset shifts commercial photography beyond simply showcasing a product and turns it into storytelling, where surreal environments and thoughtful styling help create images that feel more engaging and alive.

The image reflects Todd’s belief that strong visuals should feel like part of a larger story rather than simple documentation. By placing the model in a lush, romantic garden with a vintage mirror, the clothing becomes part of a broader visual narrative instead of simply being presented as a product. The surreal setting and thoughtful styling create a sense of mood and curiosity, encouraging viewers to imagine the world that exists beyond the frame.
The Shift Toward Creative Consistency
Today, clients are paying more attention to a clear visual identity and a unique creative perspective rather than simply producing large amounts of content. Strong, cohesive imagery is becoming just as important as the volume of content being produced.
“The smartest clients are starting to care less about production volume and more about visual coherence — they want work that feels like it came from a singular creative point of view, not a content assembly line. It’s never been more imperative to have visually compelling marketing. There’s also a real shift happening around.”
Alongside this shift, new technologies are also becoming part of the creative process. As image-making continues to evolve, the focus is no longer only on creating visuals quickly, but on maintaining originality, intention, and a distinct creative voice.
“There’s also a real shift happening around AI-integrated production. I’ve been working independently in that space for years now, and what I’m seeing is that brands are finally starting to ask serious questions about how to use these tools without losing creative identity. That’s actually the more interesting challenge — AI makes it easy to generate images, but it takes real art direction to make them mean something.”
Technology can expand possibilities, but creative direction remains what gives images purpose.

This image reflects the idea of a strong creative vision coming to life. The surreal setting, bold styling, and unexpected details make it feel more than just a fashion image — it creates a complete visual world. Rather than focusing only on the subject, every element within the frame works together with a clear sense of direction, resulting in an image that feels distinctive, intentional, and memorable.
The Moment an Idea Becomes Real
Every project begins with decisions — references, casting, color, styling, and structure. But for Brehan, the most rewarding moment comes when all those pieces align and an idea finally transforms into a powerful image. After more than 15 years in the industry, that instinct remains one of the most valuable parts of his creative process.
“The moment a concept stops being an idea and becomes an image. Everything before that — the references, the casting, the color logic, the styling decisions — it’s all problem-solving. But there’s a specific moment on set or inside a generation process where it clicks, and you know it’s right before anyone else does. That instinct is the thing I’ve spent 15 years developing, and it’s the part that can’t really be automated — even as the tools around it change completely. ”

This image reflects the moment when different creative decisions come together and start feeling like a complete idea. From the styling and color choices to the composition and overall mood, every element feels carefully considered. Rather than feeling like separate pieces placed together, the image creates a strong visual connection that brings the concept to life in a natural and meaningful way.
